Labor Day

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
A blessed and safe Labor Day to all!
Today we revel in our own toil and labors as we savor the labors of our Creator, the beauty of nature, the wonder of family and friends and community, and the works of all our neighbors and community members that have built a way of life for us to enjoy.
A Collect for Labor Day

Almighty God,
who hast so linked our lives one with another
that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives:
So guide us in the work we do,
that we may do it not for self alone,
but for the common good;
and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor,
make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers,
and arouse our concern for those who are out of work;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saint Paul provides a clear connection of building a structure to spiritual strength in his first letter to the Corinthians. To construct a house that is stable, one lays a strong foundation before placing the walls upon it. Historically, older homes have had significant settling occur as the narrow walls press down on the softened earth, particular in wet seasons. When the time and effort is taken to place an appropriate footing, the foundation to the home is strong, resists settling, and stands the test of time. Likewise, Jesus as our foundation helps us to resist the softening of our spiritual resolve and aids us to stand before the tests and temptations of the world that degrade our own spiritual balance. This work takes intentional labor to establish. May we continue to care for our spiritual foundation with the prayerful labor that strengthens our souls.
